The 1GB Per Day Offers – Jio vs. Airtel vs. Idea vs. Vodafone – The Fineprint!

Not long ago, most of us used to pay about Rs. 250 on average for 1GB of data, irrespective of the network that we were on. There were some exceptions, but not so much that we jump to that offer with ease or without a second thought. Now, thanks to the entry of Reliance Jio network in the market, every network has bent down. Literally, so much that what we used to get per month is now going to be available per day, and you just need to pay a bit more to add the free calling as a benefit.
Reliance Jio introduced something like called the Jio Prime membership and under that, a user can get 1GB of data every day for a monthly charge of Rs. 303. It did come as a tough one for the other networks, so much that they desperately started introducing several recharge offers for their existing customers so that they don’t give a thought about porting their number to the Jio network.
The new one’s network strength and reach are yet to be called reliable already, but when the offers are so tempting, many would be happy to have an additional SIM for the data benefits. Now, the competitors have given offers so good enough that it rules out the porting option from the minds.
But, it isn’t something new from these operators. The T&C (Terms and Conditions) that are applied with these offers, which are not mentioned when you are shown the offer. In this guide below, let’s compare the specific offers that are giving 1GB data per day and the other benefits.

Jio Prime Rs. 303 Monthly Recharge Offer

  • You need to pay Rs. 99 initial fee to enroll yourself in Jio Prime
  • Rs. 303 will be the monthly charges, which you will have to recharge with or pay the monthly bill
  • Before March 31st, you can enroll (by paying Rs. 99) and recharge (with Rs. 303) to get the plan benefits
  • 1GB per day data will be given, across the day with no timely restrictions
  • Once the daily data limit is crossed, you will be charged from the main balance or there are certain data packs available from which the excess data is charged (Rs. 51 for 1GB, Rs. 201 for 5GB)
  • Calls will be free, forever as they are data-based calls. There is no limit for this.
  • 100 SMS free every day (TRAI regulations limit it to 100 per number)
  • Subscription to Jio apps (JioCinema, JioTV, JioMusic, JioCloud, etc.)
  • National roaming: Free outgoing and incoming calls, free outgoing and incoming SMS, regular data usage with no special costs

Airtel 345 / 349 Monthly Recharge Offer

Note: The Rs. 345 – 349 cost is based on the region.
  • You don’t need to pay anything to enroll, just recharge and the benefits begin
  • But first, you need to check if your number is eligible to get this recharge offer
  • Rs. 345 to Rs. 349 is the monthly recharge to be done
  • Validity of the plan: 28 days
  • Recharge before March 31st so that you can continue recharging every month later to get the same benefits
  • 1GB per day data will be offered, and there are no time restrictions
  • We called Airtel thrice to confirm it and they said there is nothing like Day and Night data, but some users did get the message that out of 1GB, 500MB will be night data (2 a.m. to 5 a.m.) and 500MB will be during the day (5 a.m. to 2 a.m.)
  • Once the limit is crossed, you will be charged from the main account. It is at 8 paise per 10kb, or Rs. 8 per MB or Rs. 8000 per GB.
  • Local and STD Calls will be free (but according to T&C, it is capped at 300 minutes per day and 1200 minutes per week)
  • Once the call limit is reached, you will be charged 30 paise per minute for local and STD calls
  • No free SMS in the plan
  • National roaming: From April 1st, incoming calls will be free during roaming. Outgoing calls and SMS will have regular charges
According to Airtel, if you don’t want the main balance to be used once the data is exhausted, you need to send STOP to 1925 so that the number can use data only if there is data balance and disconnected once the limit is reached.

Idea 346 Monthly Recharge Offer

  • You don’t need to pay anything to enroll, just recharge and the benefits begin
  • But first, you need to check if your number is eligible to get this recharge offer
  • Rs. 346 is the monthly recharge to be done
  • Validity of the plan: 28 days
  • Recharge before March 31st so that you can continue recharging every month later to get the same benefits
  • 1GB per day data will be offered, but there are time restrictions
  • Out of 1GB, 500MB will be night data (12 a.m. to 6 a.m.) and 500MB will be during the day (6 a.m. to 12 a.m.)
  • If you cross the data limit for the day, you will be charged 4 paise per 10 kb (i.e. Rs. 4 per MB or Rs. 4000 per GB) and if there is no balance in your phone, Internet will be disconnected for the day
  • Local and STD Calls will be free, with the same cap as on Airtel and Vodafone – 300 minutes per day and 1200 minutes per week.
  • Once the call limit is crossed, all the local and STD calls will be at 30 paise per minute
  • No free SMS in the plan
  • National roaming: From April 1st, incoming calls will be free during roaming. Outgoing calls and SMS will have regular charges

Vodafone 345 / 352 Monthly Recharge Offer

  • You don’t need to pay anything to enroll, just recharge and the benefits begin
  • Recharge before March 15th night to get this offer, or before March 31st to get 1GB per day for 28 days
  • But first, you need to check if your number is eligible to get this recharge offer
Rs. 352 is the monthly recharge to be done
  • Validity of the plan: 56 days (28 x 2, i.e. 2 months on one recharge)
  • 1GB per day data with no time restrictions, i.e. you can use data anytime across the day
  • Once the daily limit is crossed, you will be charged from the regular balance at 4 paise per 10 kb (i.e. Rs. 4 per MB or Rs. 4000 per GB) and if there is no balance in your phone, Internet will be disconnected for the day
  • Local and STD calls will be free with a cap of 300 minutes per day and 1200 minutes per week
  • Once the limit of calls is crossed, it will be 30 paise per minute for the calls
  • No free SMS in the plan
  • National roaming: Charges will be applicable for calls and SMS on national roaming.
  • Conclusion – Always ask for the Terms and Conditions

  • I’ll be frank. I am not completely convinced with the speeds offered by Jio network and I haven’t really traveled much to judge if it works almost everywhere like Airtel did for me in most, but what is being offered by Reliance Jio is much better than the other two – Airtel, Idea, and Vodafone.
Wow, there is a lot hidden behind those SMS messages sent by the networks about the new offers. You now know how much is hidden in those T&Cs, and if you don’t stop the data charges from your main account, 1GB of excess data usage can cost you Rs. 4000 (Idea and Vodafone) to Rs. 8000 (Airtel).
For callsJio calls are free and unlimited, and that is easy to understand. The unlimited offers from the other two have a limit in actual, all of them at 300 minutes per day or 1200 per week.
For data, you now know how many hidden rules are there about the time restrictions, post-FUP limit, etc.
SMS and national roaming is another story!
Note: All these offers and their terms were confirmed by us by calling the respective customer care providers and also the representatives of the operators.

MIUI 9 with Android Nougat – List of phones expected to get update

Xiaomi’s next version of MIUI, the MIUI 9 version is said to be based on Android Nougat OS. It will be feature-loaded, as usual, because Xiaomi has always been bringing out the major MIUI updates with a huge changelog. Will we see anything less in the upcoming one? Surely not, as the MIUI 9 is said to be bringing not just the new features made exclusively for Xiaomi devices but will take advantage of the Android Nougat OS as well.
Of course, being based on Android Nougat is already one big thing because Xiaomi phones have not been very good with the Android OS updates, though the company has been sending regular MIUI updates, large or small.

MIUI 9 Features Expected

For the features, we expect some special ones and you can check out the MIUI 9 features list that we had posted, though it is not a confirmed one but has most of the likely features that might roll out in the update.
Better management of RAM, better Doze feature for battery saving when the device is resting, and an improved data saver is what we expect to surely see on the MIUI 9 update. But then, who would be the lucky phone users to get this update? It should be a known fact that not every Xiaomi phone will be eligible to receive the Android Nougat based MIUI update.

MIUI 9 Eligible Devices

Note: The list is an unofficial one and we haven’t got any information from Xiaomi about the eligible phones, but we are making this based on the update cycle followed in the past. But, you can bookmark this link so as to check later, as we will be updating the page with official info whenever available.
For now, following is the list of phones that we expect to see getting the MIUI 9 update.
  • Xiaomi Mi 5c
  • Xiaomi Mi5
  • Xiaomi Mi MIX
  • Xiaomi Mi 5s
  • Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus
  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X
  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

  • Xiaomi Redmi 4X
  • Xiaomi Redmi 4
  • Xiaomi Redmi 3s
  • Xiaomi Redmi 3s Prime
  • Xiaomi Mi Note
  • Xiaomi Mi Note Pro

ProTruly’s Darling smartphone comes with a 360-degree camera

Year over year, we see companies launching unconventional smartphones that stand out in the regular lot with a great idea and unique style. ProTruly is one such company that came up with one such device; Darling that hits all the right features in the best possible way.
The ProTruly Darling seems to the first ever smartphone to come with a built-in 360-degree camera thus allowing you to take images in all directions at once and lets you preview them. You can even upload those 360-degree images to social media sites that support 360-degree footage.
Just as you would expect, the ProTruly comes with enormous camera module on both the front and back making it uncomfortable to fit in pockets. With 360-degree images growing popular, it only makes sense to have this feature on board.
The device comes in two different variants, the standard model and the high-end model. While the standard model has plastic camera build, the high-end model packs leather, a strip of gold, and four embedded diamonds. The Darling smartphone was launched back in last year and now it popped up at the MWC 2017 event.
There seems to be a confusion in the pricing, as ChinaDaily claims the standard version costs at $600 and the higher-end for close to $1,300. While Mashable reports at $500 and $800. Currently, the device is available only in China.

Galaxy S8 Hands-on Images Cannot Give You a Closer Look at the Flagship Than This

You got to look at what appeared to be the official press render of the Galaxy S8 and this is your golden opportunity to look at the upcoming flagship from all four sides. Yes, that is correct, Samsung's flagship can be seen in the flesh and we are confident that you will appreciate the level of efforts the company took in order to bring out a myriad number of differences that will separate this high-end offering from the rest of the phones.
Five Leaked Images of the Galaxy S8 Will Help You Appreciate More of What Samsung Has Incorporated on Its Upcoming Flagship
The first image that you can see below is the front side of the phone and it is not surprising that the bright blue background is the wallpaper on the device because this little addition is constant with the rest of the manufacturer's flagships. However, what is not constant is that the image from BGR shows a bezel-less display and it takes a lot of design proficiency to increase the screen-to-body-ratio of a high-end device. Sure, it definitely trails behind the Mi MIX, but hold them next to each other and you will see that the Galaxy S8 comes very close.

The part that is covered by the metal construction features a front-facing camera that also features an iris scanner right next to it. The feature that was present in the Galaxy Note7 has found its way to the Galaxy S8. Looking at the bottom of the phone, you have your Type-C USB port coupled with the 3.5mm headphone jack and a tiny speaker grill. Since this could be a pre-production unit and the case itself might not be entirely designed for the flagship, we cannot tell if the part on the right-hand side of the phone features an opening for the S Pen accessory.
Looks like when the phone is officially announced, those details shall become known. The overall construction of the phone looks like a job well done, and we're also assuming that Samsung is going to be introducing a lot more color models down the road in order to bolster its sales. This is going to be done to compensate the losses that the Note7 incurred, and help the company and its loyal band of customers to move on what happened with the phablet.
Did you enjoy these images? I personally enjoyed staring at that bezel-less display and I am under the impression that so did you.

Twitter's latest security update: More muting options, follow-ups for reports

Twitter's approach to combating abuse on its platform has been multi-layered so far, and today even more security features are being added to the pile. This week, Twitter users will find that they have more control over what they mute and how long that content stays muted, while Twitter itself is doing a lot more behind the scenes to bolster its anti-abuse measures.

First, let's talk about the changes that Twitter users have control over themselves. When this new update goes live, you'll have more filtering options to choose from, which will now let you filter accounts based a number of different parameters. For instance, maybe you don't want to see content from users that don't have a profile picture, or ones that haven't verified their email address, potentially cutting back on abuse you see from accounts that were created hastily with only the intent to troll.

Your muting options have also been expanded. They were already pretty well fleshed out after an update that arrived in November, but now you can mute accounts directly from your timeline. You can also mute accounts and content for a predetermined amount of time, whether that's for one day, one month, or indefinitely.

The other part of this update centers around work Twitter is doing on the back end. Twitter is implementing new algorithms that will help it identify abusive accounts without needing to rely on reports. When these algorithms identify the potential for abuse – such as repeated, unsolicited tweeting to other users – Twitter will implement certain restrictions on the offending account. For instance, Twitter may make that account's tweets only visible to its followers for a set amount of time.

Twitter is quick to admit that while these algorithms are still in their infancy, mistakes will be made, but in general it won't be taking action against an account until it's confident that abuse is happening.

Of course, you can remove the need for algorithms entirely by reporting abusive content when you see it, and that report function is getting some new features today as well. Now, Twitter will follow-up with you when you report content or accounts, letting you know when it's received your report and when it has taken action. While you probably shouldn't expect Twitter to get too specific with its follow-ups, it'll be nice to be kept in the loop nonetheless.

Slowly but surely, Twitter's methods for combating abuse are becoming more comprehensive. Twitter doesn't seem to be slowing down, either, so don't expect this to be the last thing we hear on the matter. Have you been using Twitter's new tools? Have you noticed a difference in the amount of abuse on the platform? Let us know in the comments section.

YouTube launches its own streaming TV service

At an event in Los Angeles this afternoon, YouTube announced its own streaming TV service. The offering will mix live-streams of broadcast and cable television programming with the wealth of online video found on YouTube. It's the latest in a surge of over-the-top (OTT) services trying to woo consumers who never bought into traditional cable television.
For $35 a month, subscribers get all four major networks - ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC - and around 30 of the biggest cable channels. That price covers six accounts, so each member of the household can have a personalized account that offers recommendations tuned to their taste.
Sadly, like many other streaming bundles, it has gaps. YouTube TV, as it's called, will be missing channels from Viacom, including big names like Comedy Central and MTV. It also won't have programming from Turner Broadcasting, meaning you won't be able to get CNN, TBS, and TNT. AMC Networks, Discovery Communications, and A+E Networks are also missing as of the launch announcement.
The last few years have seen a major shift in the advertising industry, with billions of dollars that once flowed into television commercials being shifted to the world of online video. YouTube has been among the biggest winners of this transformation, which is being driven in part by viewers who increasingly opt away from broadcast television networks and expensive cable packages. About 40 percent of millennial households rely on just an internet connection for entertainment.
Increasingly, the audience is online
Connected TV viewing grew by 65 percent last year, according to a study from Pivotal Research. And for some prime-time television programming, between 30 and 40 percent of the total views are now coming from connected TVs. Advertisers are eager to get into OTT, because it promises the quality and engagement of television with the enhanced targeting of digital.
YouTube revealed yesterday that users now watch a billion hours of video on its platform each day, quickly closing in on the volume of television consumed by all Americans each day. If YouTube's new service can make its videos front and center on the biggest screen in the house, it can start to command a higher price for its ads. In exchange, YouTube's new partners from the world of traditional TV partners can make use of its machine learning technology to improve recommendations and get users hooked on new shows.

Number of Internet users in India could cross 450 million by June: report

New Delhi: The number of Internet users in India is expected to reach 450-465 million by June, up 4-8% from 432 million in December 2016, a report from the Internet and Mobile Association of India and market research firm IMRB International said.
The report added its forecast does not factor in the impact of demonetisation, which gave a boost to digital and mobile transactions.
The report said overall Internet penetration in India is currently around 31%.
“Urban India with an estimated population of 444 million already has 269 million (60%) using the Internet. Rural India, with an estimated population of 906 million as per 2011 census, has only 163 million (17%) Internet users. Thus, there are potential approximately 750 million users still in rural India who are yet to become Internet users; if only they can be reached out properly.”
ALSO READ: A billion Indian identities at risk as Modi widens digital reach with Aadhaar
The report points out that 77% of urban users and 92% of rural users consider mobile as the primary device for accessing the Internet, largely driven by availability and affordability of smartphones.
“Different mobile handset manufacturers have focused on introducing low priced handsets and tablets compatible to access the Internet. More and more companies are getting into this segment and this has resulted in competition primarily basis the retail price and features of the device. Fall in the rates for Internet access due to cut throat competition among mobile service providers has also contributed to significant increase in mobile phone as preferred device for Internet access,” the report said.
The pattern of usage, however, starkly differs across rural and urban populations. While services such as e-mails, social networking and online shopping are prevalent in urban India, it is entertainment in the form of video and audio content driving Internet consumption in the rural counterpart of the country. Rural India is claimed to have leapfrogged to mobile technology with lower penetration of computers as a medium to access Internet.
ALSO READ: Digital looms large
In urban India, the Internet user base grew by 7% to 263 million for year-on-year period ended October 2016, which is expected to be 275-285 million by June 2017. For the same annual period ending October 2016, rural India's Internet user base grew by 22% between to 157 million and is forecast to reach 170-180 million by June 2017.
Another report published by market research firm Counterpoint in January estimated that India's smartphone user base grew to over 300 million in December 2016 as the smartphone market grew by 18% for year ended December 2016 as compared to the global smartphone market which grew at 3%. The same firm had published a report last year, claiming that India had surpassed the US to become the second largest smartphone market in the world.
